Donโt ask why during your job interview

I encourage my job seeking clients to ask questions during interviews. It makes it more conversational and less interrogational for a start. But more than that, it helps to demonstrate their curiosity, their ability to join the dots, to have insights and generate ideas. ๐๐ป ๐๐ต๐ผ๐ฟ๐, ๐ถ๐ ๐ต๐ฒ๐น๐ฝ๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ถ๐ป๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ถ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ ๐๐ผ ๐๐ฒ๐ฒ ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐บ ๐ฎ๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ผ๐น๐๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐๐ผ ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ถ๐ฟ ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ฏ๐น๐ฒ๐บ. We want that. Badly.
But early on in my coaches training, I learned ๐ป๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ ๐ฎ ๐พ๐๐ฒ๐๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐๐ถ๐๐ต โ๐ช๐ต๐โ. Thatโs because a โWhyโ question can be seen as judgemental. And coaching, in its purest form, is never judgemental. (Career coaching doesnโt always follow that approach, and thatโs OK.)
Imagine you get asked questions like these in a meeting at work:
โWhy did you decide to launch the product in February?"
โWhy did you try and resolve the customerโs issue that way?โ
โWhy did you choose that supplier?โ
โWhy did you code it like that?โ
Hear questions like that in a meeting, and most people are immediately on the defensive. It sounds like our analysis, our decision making, our critical thinking, is being questioned. Itโs challenging and itโs threatening. ๐๐ป๐ฑ ๐ต๐ถ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐บ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฎ๐ด๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ ๐ฑ๐ผ๐ปโ๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ป๐ ๐๐ผ ๐ณ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐น ๐๐ต๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ป ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐โ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐ถ๐ป๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ถ๐ฒ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐๐ผ๐!
But thereโs good news. ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ ๐พ๐๐ฒ๐๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ ๐๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐๐ ๐๐ถ๐๐ต โ๐ช๐ต๐โ ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ป ๐ฏ๐ฒ ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ธ๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐๐ผ ๐ถ๐ ๐๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐๐ ๐๐ถ๐๐ต โ๐ช๐ต๐ฎ๐โ ๐ผ๐ฟ โ๐๐ผ๐โ ๐ถ๐ป๐๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฑ.ย
โHow did you decide to launch the product in February?โ
โWhat factors did you consider when you tried to resolve the customer's issue?โ
โHow did you evaluate the suppliers?โ
โWhat coding approaches did you consider?โ
You get the same (or more) information, but in a much less confrontational way. It just takes a bit of thought and practice.ย
So please, use questions to make your job interviews conversational.
