Donโ€™t ask why during your job interview

I encourage my job seeking clients to ask questions during interviews. It makes it more conversational and less interrogational for a start. But more than that, it helps to demonstrate their curiosity, their ability to join the dots, to have insights and generate ideas. ๐—œ๐—ป ๐˜€๐—ต๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜, ๐—ถ๐˜ ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ฝ๐˜€ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜„๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฒ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—บ ๐—ฎ๐˜€ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐˜€๐—ผ๐—น๐˜‚๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐˜๐—ผ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ถ๐—ฟ ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ฏ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—บ. We want that. Badly.


But early on in my coaches training, I learned ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜ ๐—ฎ ๐—พ๐˜‚๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐˜„๐—ถ๐˜๐—ต โ€œ๐—ช๐—ต๐˜†โ€. Thatโ€™s because a โ€œWhyโ€ question can be seen as judgemental. And coaching, in its purest form, is never judgemental. (Career coaching doesnโ€™t always follow that approach, and thatโ€™s OK.)


Imagine you get asked questions like these in a meeting at work:

  • โ€œWhy did you decide to launch the product in February?"

  • โ€œWhy did you try and resolve the customerโ€™s issue that way?โ€

  • โ€œWhy did you choose that supplier?โ€

  • โ€œWhy did you code it like that?โ€


Hear questions like that in a meeting, and most people are immediately on the defensive. It sounds like our analysis, our decision making, our critical thinking, is being questioned. Itโ€™s challenging and itโ€™s threatening. ๐—”๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€ ๐—ฑ๐—ผ๐—ปโ€™๐˜ ๐˜„๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—น ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐˜„๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐˜†โ€™๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜„๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚!


But thereโ€™s good news. ๐—˜๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜† ๐—พ๐˜‚๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜ ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜๐˜€ ๐˜„๐—ถ๐˜๐—ต โ€œ๐—ช๐—ต๐˜†โ€ ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜„๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ธ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐˜€๐—ผ ๐—ถ๐˜ ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜๐˜€ ๐˜„๐—ถ๐˜๐—ต โ€œ๐—ช๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜โ€ ๐—ผ๐—ฟ โ€œ๐—›๐—ผ๐˜„โ€ ๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ.ย 

  • โ€œHow did you decide to launch the product in February?โ€

  • โ€œWhat factors did you consider when you tried to resolve the customer's issue?โ€

  • โ€œHow did you evaluate the suppliers?โ€

  • โ€œWhat coding approaches did you consider?โ€


You get the same (or more) information, but in a much less confrontational way. It just takes a bit of thought and practice.ย 


So please, use questions to make your job interviews conversational.
