Some people keep a careful record, step by step, of the impact they’ve had throughout their career. I’m one of them. Every congrats email, every sales deal I helped win, the revenue from every piece of market research…the occasional furtive peek inside the CRM to see how I’d helped move the needle on leads.

If you don’t do that, two words of advice: Start now.

But, that doesn’t help you get hired, right here, right now. 𝗦𝗼 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲? Because your next employer needs to know.

Try this: Focus on your current role, or one in the past. Imagine if that role had been open the whole time you were working it. The role existed, but there was just an empty chair with no-one to keep it warm:

❓ Which prospects would never have become customers?

❓ Which customers would have churned?

❓ Which projects would have never been started or completed?

❓ Which internal processes would have remained inefficient?

❓ Which ideas would never have seen the light of day?

❓ Which decisions would have been different without your critical input?

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲, 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸. Talk to your co-workers, managers, partners, and other contacts, past and present. Ask them the same questions listed above.

𝗡𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱, 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀. Did your former manager say you cut the time for month end reporting from about two days to less than one? On your resume then, that could be “Cut time for management reporting by 50%, enabling better management decisions”. Did a sales rep you worked with say they would never have landed those 3 new accounts without your demos? If you only had 30 customers beforehand, on your resume that could be “Helped grow installed base by 10% by differentiating …”

Got it? Give it a try, book a free call at the top of the page if you want to chat about it.
