Your network is the best way to find the work you want

But few people leverage their network well. Hereโ€™s how to fix that.


Your network has always been key, and now itโ€™s more important than ever. Thatโ€™s not going to change. Many people broadcast their job search on LinkedIn after a layoff. Nothing wrong with that, but itโ€™s not the best you can do:


๐Ÿ˜ฉ You donโ€™t control the LinkedIn algorithm. You really have no idea who your post is served up to, or if they just scrolled past it


๐Ÿ˜ฉ One and done isnโ€™t enough. Even if people in your network see your post and they want to help, attention spans are short. In a couple of days, people will have other priorities


๐—ฌ๐—ผ๐˜‚ ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฎ๐˜† ๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฝ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฒ ๐˜„๐—ต๐—ผ ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐˜„๐—ถ๐—น๐—น๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—น๐—ฒ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ฝ ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚. Hereโ€™s the approach Iโ€™ve used successfully, and the approach I suggest to my coaching clients:


1๏ธโƒฃ Figure out who are the most important people in your network

3๏ธโƒฃ Get those contact details into a spreadsheet (Iโ€™m assuming Google Sheets here)


4๏ธโƒฃ Once a month, create an email that lets people know where you are in your job search. Where youโ€™ve applied, interviews youโ€™ve had, interviews you have coming up etc. ๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ธ๐—ฒ ๐˜€๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚ ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜ ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฒ ๐—ธ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜„ ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚โ€™๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐˜€๐˜๐—ถ๐—น๐—น ๐˜๐—ฟ๐˜†๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ณ๐—ถ๐—น๐—น ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ ๐—ฝ๐—ถ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฒ. ๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ธ๐—ฒ ๐˜€๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚ ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐—ธ ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ถ๐—ฟ ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ฝ. In the Gmail world, itโ€™s easiest if you create that email as a template


5๏ธโƒฃ Use a mail merge tool (Yamm, yet another mail merge, is great) to send that update. Yamm will show you what got delivered, who opened, who replied etc


6๏ธโƒฃ And - if you identified your key people correctly - they will actually reply to you! They will offer encouragement at a minimum, job leads, referrals, and warm intros
