Life and Career Coaching: My Journey from Accidental Coach to Empowerment

I didn’t set out to be a coach. It was more like coaching found me. In a big way…
So how did I get into life and career coaching? Well, by happy accident the pieces just fell into place over the last few years. I got asked to take on a people management role at work. I’m quite introverted, so that’s not something that I ever sought out. But, I took it on, liked it, and according to my team, excelled at it. Then, I volunteered with EforAll, using my business experience to help entrepreneurs start small businesses in their communities. And then, I started volunteering as a career coach with Pay Forward Coaching, helping job seekers to land.
That’s when things got interesting. Through Pay Forward, I was able to take 60 hours of formal life coach training with ACA Coach Academies, free of charge. That was a light bulb moment. Through study and practice I was able to experience how skilled coaching could truly empower people to live happier lives. I was hooked!
Luckily, being introverted is really useful as a coach. Because a great coach listens way more than they talk. Waaaay more. Powerful coaching is all about deep listening. Deep listening, watching body language, and observing a client's emotions while they talk. When I talk, it’s to share an observation, to support the client's self-discovery, or to ask a question that nudges them to think differently. My role is to help you figure out your journey, not to tell you what your journey should be. That's empowering.
