It’s tempting to treat your resume like that drawer everyone has in their kitchen. You know the one. The one with the odds and ends. The junk drawer. You stuff every role, every task, every project you’ve ever done onto your resume hoping a recruiter will find something they like. This is especially true for the older job seeker. Our junk drawers are fuller because we’ve had more years to fill them. Same is true for our resumes.

As every wise marketer knows, if you position your product to solve everything for everyone, you end up with nothing. You fail. You have to solve a specific problem for a specific market segment. Therein lies the path to sales and marketing greatness. And, just in case you haven’t figured it out yet, getting hired is 100% an exercise in sales and marketing. And obviously, you’re the product.

So ditch all the junk from your resume. Figure out what you’re really, really good at. What defines you and your work? Write it down, 10 words max. If you need help with that, the golden thread tool is, well, golden. Figure out your golden thread and shape your resume and job search around those qualities.

Here's my golden thread worksheet if you want to discover yours.
